As a juvenile it is blue and yellow with pale vertical stripes over its body. When it matures its body becomes lighter and each scale is edged in lighter yellow, making a latticework effect. The edges of its fins become edged in bright blue and yellow. Not all fish transition when at the same size, but it usually begins when they are approximately 3 inches. It is similar in appearance
