The NAL began its inaugural season with just seven teams: Kansas City Monarchs, Chicago American Giants, Cincinnati Tigers, Memphis Red Rox, Detroit Stars, Birmingham Black Barons, Indianapolis Athletics, and St. Louis Stars.
