Despite the abundant scientific evidence collected over the past 70 years describing the health hazards of tobacco products, smoking remains the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death.1, 2, 3 While the figures have steadily decreased over time, in 2020, approximately 22.3% of the global population aged 15 and older (an estimated 1.30 billion people) were currently using some form of tobacco.3 In 2019, tobacco use (smoking, second-hand smoke exposure, and smokeless tobacco) was the second-leading global risk factor for attributable deaths after high systolic blood pressure.4 The majority of smoking-related deaths are linked to four non-communicable diseases: ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, and cancer of the trachea, bronchi, and lungs
However, since the introduction of the e-cigarette, that number is now increasing, and it is estimated that one in five high school students may now be using tobacco products
